What are you thinking now that I will say? It's hanging up! My mind, sure it's beta 2 isn't it? Great to see the RSS icon at the toolbar. Great assurance that this is going to have a wider use in the near future. More security restrictions seem to have hanged the system. Can't say it now. The reason for trying it out is that IE still has the major share of the market. And, we designers have to concentrate on that, especially how the page is rendered, Is PNG with Alpha channel (transparency) supported? SVG? and stuff like that.

If you are fortunate enough to have Firefox with all the gizmos, here is one more great thing for a designer. CSS Viewer is an extension to see the parameters of CSS without bothering about lines of code. Just pointing the cursor will show the entire details. Very Handy!

This is my would-be blog I'm really excited to switch to a new world of photoblogging with design experimentation, scribbling, and of course photographs .. thinking of using words like design playground for the design experiments and iPad - hey I got this on the breeze, never thought about that before, probably that's creativity ... ideas popping out -iPad for scribbled stuff.

One of today's emails told me to check out Google's Page Creator. IMO It's great for amateur who don't want to deal a lot with technical geekery. It has browser interface to create pages. As a professional designer, I don't find it very suprising though. I am expecting Google's Analytics to be more available.

Just got impressed with this shirt on display at a local store. I got that on the same day, just to realize it's a trend these days. The revival of the old indian design patterns that were adorning the women's clothing especially the saree. Indian traditional clothing inspires me, and many times I've passed on that colour schemes to my graphic design. This is one of those intricate patterns on my shirt.

Web re-design strategy

Just keeping up with working on the redesign of this website. Had to ditch the previous sketches since it had few glitches that compromise the site re-design objectives. It's hard to just figure out with these sketches, perhaps I need to make some prototypes and get live user feedback. Just to see that it is funtionally feasible. Since this is going to be all flash - the trend of web these days is more on audio and video - I need to learn this technology well enough. It's something good to keep updating with the trends, however, I feel these technologies are bit hostile to creativity and that's the reason I quit 3D stuff. Graphic design helps me put the idea into practise as it comes.

Incubating multiple eggs

Last week I experimented on putting multiple projects with their concepts in the brain for further incubation (background processing in computer terminology). I guess it's still in experimentation, and I am hardly finding any light. Perhaps, incubation as a creative strategy only works when you have one single idea in mind. When you are wrestling with ONE idea and sleep with that, there are more chances that your brain processes while you are at rest. I don't know if mind can jump between entirely different problems. As an optimist, I don't feel like quitting now. Got to tame the mind for good.

Designing is not about art for art sake. Design is not about breaking the artistic barriers of the world without any point or purpose. Design is about answering a brief. Design is about making clear communication to the public. Design is NOT to communicate to other designers or other art critics (of which you seem to be in abundance). Design is being clear and creating revenue for businesses, allowing everyone to remember

the design. Design is meant to be fundamentally timeless.

Upon looking at the categories that you choose your award recipients, it was noted that you have small, niche business where the design does not make a real significant point or impact in the marketplace. Your finalists mostly missed the reason to design in the first place -- to communicate a point & purpose.

Companies do not employ designers to spend all their budget on something which is not timeless and does not make the best possible statement about their company/product.

I now note your attention to Fusion Design and the way in which the individual designer of website design was given no personal recognition.

This is unacceptable. Each designer has his/her own personal mark to make on the world, the company is a vehicle in which they use to express that, making the individual valuable. Without individually designers, companies would have no work.

Following yesterday's spanking I've learnt to deny work that interrupt important stuff. It's hard to say NO, but, we have to say that. Work is getting hectic, and I am forced to get someone to assist in my work. It's hard!

Today, I was explaining my colleagues about the cons of working both as print and web designer. You know, they are different animals and need different mindsets. Moving from one medium to the other often produces something like jet lag. My first print work was looking more like website and recent web page template had tell-tale signs of print design work :) I was telling her that I got to design a 'home' page, when actually I meant the 'cover' page of the newsletter

Another thing that I've got to know is that web as a medium is under transformation. We are moving towards tighter integration and new technologies are making it more possible to work from anywhere/anytime. Even with team members suituated in the other side of the planet. My friend wanted me design a website template and is willing to pay for it. What's interesting is that this guy is exactly on the other side of the planet. It's amazing how we can work together without geometric boundaries!

It's been rather a hectic day designing lots of things from web to print. I guess it's too taxing for a designer to work on multiple things together.

Design Observer has a fresh new update with a topic that's quite old. Infact, that's a hard truth for designers. Understanding the clients, putting their requirements first, and most importantly function before form, which is mostly the battle between the heart and the mind. It's disconcerting initially, to get on with the criticism, but, as designers we need to take up with it. Being defensive sounds something wrong with the work. We need to understand the client, and make some steps to avoid the common title 'hard-headed dudes'.

It's a weekend and am at the office to finish things pending. Among these is this kids newsletter 'Khushi'. As a designer I do need lots of peace and quiet to work effectively, and hence the work at weekends. Ofcourse, freelancing is a luxury when it comes to working alone. It really suits me but I would miss working among a team as in-house designer. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages. ... this work is still in progress, I wish to complete by today... since it's a low budget design piece I chose to use two spot colours, red and pink. From Creative Blender - the experiment of blending images - I've learnt that it's not so bad, as I thought, to get ideas from other's work. I was browsing through a Free templates site; The templates are awesome, a great source of inspiration.

Free Templates, are often despised by designers; termed as 'cookie cutters'. I would say it's not so bad. It's great to look under the hood, to examine how designers make the site. Hey, who said we have to use as it is, CSS has the ability to change the design drastically with simple tweaking.

So Feel the design in the making!

Creative Blending

It's a normal work day again, busy with lot of tasks. I've just 'made' some time to update this blog.

Creative blending, as I experimented is a great thing in the collaborative art+design communities. It's nice to see how others work on the same problem and how the idea gets processed from one's work into the other. Creativity is not just about trying hard to get original source but taking 'inspiration' ideas from already solved ones, to extract the patterns from it. The point here is the result, the result has to be unique.

Good way to get something from inspiration is to ask what makes it unique/slick/creative/strike? Study the pattern and use it in something else. The more we do it automatically gets injected into the subconscious and you no longer think about it but just do.

Design in Motion I was just researching on motion graphics and this seems something interesting to me. Here's a glance My prediction that the majority of graphic designers will work with time-based media within the next ten years may be seen as pure speculation, or written off as premature by some. While I have placed importance on research for this prediction, in my opinion, whether the changes happen within ten years is a relatively minor point. The shift from designers needed for development of static images to motion graphics has already started, and whether it be ten years or twenty years, the fact that designers need to prepare for the future remains. Designers who aren’t able to work with time-based media will continue to be needed, but will be in less demand, will have less leverage with salary negations, and will be restricted in the scope of their creative input. As new media has emerged, the convergence of different forms of audio, visual, and information technologies has become increasingly common. Disciplines such as sound design, animation, computer programming and video editing are truly important for designers working with modern forms of communication to understand, and least on a fundamental level. Graphic designers are already being called on to produce interactive user interfaces of all kinds, and in many cases, they must design their visuals to be accompanied with music and sound effects. Those that have been able to effectively apply their design skills to new media have been highly sought after. In addition to the obvious expanded career opportunities, there are other benefits for graphic designers who understand time-based media design. Even if a designer decides to work exclusively with printed imagery, the study of related disciplines is valuable for increased ability to collaborate with others in a creative team or advertising agency. An important discovery by artists working with new media is that the very process of studying related disciplines can lead to stronger critical thinking skills in relation to visual problem solving. The question to ask with regard to graphic design is not “how many years until the ability to design motion graphics becomes a required skill?”, but rather “how can designers prepare themselves for future marketability in a competitive field?” The opportunity for designers to profit and advance their creativity is real. the Art of India; inspiration from ethno-electronic music

The design gang loves the left side of the illustration, and not the top one ... they say the left is simply beautiful and the top is simply ugly :) Things we don't see or things that we overlook are clear to the viewers. We are half-blinded by looking at that for hours. Normal trick I do is to copy the image and flip it the other way ... It provides a fresh look at the piece.

Of course, it's a bit monotonous but since I'm talking about just the language of the script, I guess this thing will do. Need to more effectively express the beauty of the letter forms of the various languages. May be I can get the feel of unity in diversity, since almost all the languages are different yet they come from a since source, Sanskrit the ancient Indian language.

Time for more urban meets ethno style :) The logic behind is simple the fusion of ethnic with electronic. I'm deriving inspiration direct from world fusion music. Ikarus (ikarusmusic.com) is an old favourite music of mine. I've been hearing to this guy since four years now. Speaking about music, there is strong relation between sound and music, the relation goes into the subconscious. Music is the inspiration, it can provoke visual imagery ...

Was thinking and researching some inspirational quotes for the calendar that I've been working for quite some time now. Weekend was great, had some time to explore the woods in the backyard ... the clearing in the woods was so beautiful that I wished I had a camera with me ... back in at home I had some time for doodling. The scribbling session was fun, we get the unexpected ... this time I was making some dragons ... eeeeeew dragons ... and I thought what's going on in my mind.

Later I thought I would draw something divine, made a picture of Christ and down there ... 'self-portrait' of mine.

... nothing in the head perhaps ... sometimes nothing comes out ... time to relax, the message is clear :)

The After-Lunch version! Not a bad progression, lot of tweaking needed, as I plan out the general layout of the calendar. This 'template' will be reflected on the rest of the pages, with minimum alteration of colour, photographs.

Iterating the calendar design For a change, I made it in landscape format. Working out with the splendid colour of yellow, may be I can use it for the summer time ... the dots were kept as a place holders for the dates ... the white geometry is done after playing around with the some of the options, we can create some artificial patterns that blend with the natural

Have been working on a calendar for the year 2006. As I've researched people's tastes;on what they would like to put on the wall. I found from staff and friends that they would go for something scenic, from nature. yeah ... ofcourse and the shops are full of such things. I needed to make something ceative and unique, I thought lets follow the ambience of the time, that's what the calendar refers to, the passing of seasons; Here is just a rough draft of the thingy!

Creative blocks are mostly caused when there isn't input, or raw materials, may be due to conflict in ideas between the team. As this is not new to me today, I just spend my time aimlessly. The greatest problem with these kind of creative people is that nobody can get when the project is going to finish, and what's happening with the work. Probably this is the beginning of my experimentation of posting some scribbles. Scribbling is a great way to clear the airwaves, since this improves concentration. If the scibbles don't turn out into anything recognisable and if they look like chicken scrathces, then I feel I've to take sometime off, the mind needs something else to sidetrack. Fortunately, after concentrating for sometime, I could get something from this. Here is a scribble of an alien creature, which I didn't christen it yet :)

Motion Graphic Design After working in a broadcasting company for some time as a graphic designer, I've found myself lured to this medium of adding the fourth dimension. The standard software is Adobe Aftereffects. Just installed the software today and committed myself to get the hang out of it. I'm "working" late to learn this stuff.
